The pretend revolution

Even in Manet’s own era, there were imposters who, having perceived the revolution that was happening before everyone else, underwent an apparent conversion and, for a while, were able to benefit both from that conversion and from conservation. Among the most typical, and we will return to him, is Fougerolles, one of the characters in Zola’s L’Oeuvre (4), based on the real-life painter Jules Bastien-Lepage. Fougerolles is a prototypical character who can be found in every field: for example, in haute couture, you have revolutionaries like André Courrèges, and then you have your creative arrangers like Yves Saint Laurent. In every field there are people who, in general, come after, who understand what has happened and know how to make a ‘soft’ version of the ‘hard’ revolution, and thereby make a hefty profit. At one time even Manet’s friends preferred Bastien-Lepage to Manet. It was no joke: Manet had not yet been consecrated and his apes, the apes of genius, were already making money even though he was still condemned — he died still condemned. If you have the mystique of the accursed artist, it may be a good sign if you die while still condemned, but I don’t think it’s fun to experience it.
